LCD vs. Plasma

Let’s kick things off with this popular question?

So, which one do I recommend, Plasma or LCD technology. If asked a year ago, I would have most likely and unequivocally said to go with Plasma technology. Due to their larger sizes, ability to render a truer black, no fast motion artifacts, among other reasons, they were the choice to go with. But how the times do change in the world of technology!

Now my retort is a bit more democratic. At this point in time, I hesitate to recommend one over the other. I now answer with an unequivocal “it depends”.

And from there we would talk of your particular situation. The following questions are asked:

  • Is it a bright room that it is to go in?
  • I ask that question again.

Brightness, Sun, Glare. If the room has any of these traits, consider LCD. While Plasma still has a more natural looking image, costs less per square inch and comes in larger sizes, if there is any abundance of sunlight in the room, don’t do it. LCD can handle a brighter locale and still look great. Its colors are more vivid, they are the first to offer 1080p capabilities (the subject of another topic), offer lighter and the larger sizes (37+) and are only slightly more expensive than plasma. Brands such as Sharp, Sony and LG are leading the way with these.

Now if you have a dark(er) room or find that you are primarily watching at night, I would nudge you towards a Plasma due to the reasons stated above. They are now on their 10th generation of sets. The following reasons should NOT disuade you: burn in, shorter life span, noisier or even heaviness. These problems did show up on earlier made units, but the better companies have solved these issues. My only hesitation is that only a couple of sets offer the 1080p specification, but I think this is only a temporary scenario and that by end of year we will see many more Plasma manufacturers offering 1080p models.

Well that’s my quick take on the LCD vs. Plasma conundrum. Please feel free to contact me to further discuss this topic or any other. Thanks again for checking out All Media Consultants. I hope that we can assist you with any and all media needs.

Happy Watching (and Listening),
